Dr. Kathleen A. Paciga, “Katie,” is an educator, researcher, and family gal. She earned a B.S. in Elementary Education and a B.A. in Spanish from Loyola University Chicago in 2002; a M.S.Ed in Instructional Leadership from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) in 2006. She completed her doctoral studies in Curriculum & Instruction with a concentration in Literacy, Language & Culture from UIC in 2011.
Katie began her career as an educator with six years of primary level teaching experiences in schools serving a low income and English language learning population. She connects those experiences to her college level teaching and teacher professional development. Katie presently is employed as an Assistant Professor of Education at Columbia College Chicago. Throughout her tenure in higher education, Katie’s teaching and research interests have specialized in the fields of early language and literacy development, teaching, and assessment with specific attention to the role of media and technology in those domains.Her work has been published in several peer-reviewed journals and much of it is indexed on Academia.edu. In July 2015 Katie received the first ever Early Career Research Fellowship from the TEC Center at the Erikson Institute and the Fred Rogers Center for Early Learning and Media at St.Vincent College with generous funding from the Grable Foundation. The focus of her work with this appointment will be to move the NAEYC & FRC Joint Position forward. Throughout the two year fellowship, Katie will focus on updating what we know from the research and evidence base that underpin the principles and guidelines from the 2012 Position Statement. She will also take the lead in exploring emerging research on how technology and digital media can support healthy social and emotional development, in keeping with the legacy of Fred Rogers.
Katie is also a mom to three young children and a wife to one very supportive husband. She’s passionate about reading children’s picture books (print and/or digital), gardening, hockey, and spending time with family and friends. You can follow her blog or find her on Twitter @kpaciga.
