In this unique four-day workshop, you will have your work critiqued, produce new pages, and come away with solid direction for your novel.

Horror and heart-pounding suspense… Ghost stories and serial killers…Psychological thrillers, Gothic tales, dark magical realism, and the occult. Dark and twisty kidlit has enjoyed a recent revival. If you’re writing a young adult or middle grade novel that touches on any frightening or chilling subject matter, either realistic or fantastical, we can help you shape it into something un-put-down-able. (We promise!)

In this unique four-day workshop, you will have your work critiqued, produce new pages, and come away with solid direction for your novel.

Join acclaimed authors and experienced writing teachers Nova Ren Suma and Micol Ostow for a chance to workshop a section of your novel, refine your idea, discuss craft issues specific to writing horror, and gain inspiration to keep moving forward.

All you’ll need for this workshop is an idea and your opening (20–40 pages). We will have one large workshop for group critiques to discuss a section from your novel in an honest, supportive environment co-led by the faculty. We will have craft lectures, prompts for freewriting, open discussions on topics of your choosing, opportunities for you to share your work in a reading, a possible special guest speaker, and of course retreat time to write.

In workshop, each writer will have up to 20 pages discussed with the group. Each writer will also be paired with a faculty mentor for an in-depth, one-on-one meeting, where you will have the opportunity to share an additional 20 pages of your novel (40 pages total). Your faculty mentor will provide a detailed edit letter, giving you guidance to help you complete your draft.
